Also Epic Link, EpicCare Link portal
EpicCare Link is the most common way a home health or post-acute agency sees a hospital’s chart today, and the most commonly misunderstood. It is not a network and not a records service. It is a window a single health system opens into its own Epic installation for organizations it chooses, read-only, with the health system deciding who gets in, how long approval takes, and which parts of the chart are visible.
Three things follow for an agency:
- One account per health system. An agency that admits patients from four systems applies to four, maintains four logins, and trains staff on four sets of rules. The systems’ own pages put approval at two to three weeks, with an ink-signed agreement.
- Only that system’s record. The specialist the patient saw at a different system, the prior practice, the lab that is not that system’s lab: none of it is there. The portal is complete about the hospital and silent about everything else.
- Looking, not receiving. The chart is on a screen. Getting a document into the agency’s own system means printing or downloading it, one patient at a time.
A network query is the alternative: one request that reaches every connected organization at once and returns their documents into the agency’s own record. EpicCare Link versus one network query sets out when each one wins.
