Also CommonWell
CommonWell is a network in the ordinary sense, where Carequality is an agreement between networks. Founded in 2013 by a group of EHR vendors, it runs the services its members’ customers use to find a patient’s records at other members: a record locator that links one patient’s identity across organizations, and document exchange between them. A practice or agency whose EHR is a CommonWell member is on the network through that vendor; it does not join on its own.
Two facts matter for an agency trying to get outside records:
- It reaches Carequality. Since 2018 CommonWell has been connected to the Carequality framework, so a query from a CommonWell participant can reach a Carequality participant and the reverse. In practice the two together are what people mean by “the networks”.
- It is a QHIN. CommonWell was among the first networks designated under TEFCA in December 2023, so its participants also exchange under the federal framework as it grows.
The vendors most relevant to post-acute and home-based care have come onto the networks through one or the other: the home health EHRs that offer a built-in records query generally do it through CommonWell or Carequality, and whether a given agency can query depends on which EHR it runs and whether the feature is turned on. A network query made through a service like Vivlio does not depend on the agency’s EHR at all.
